Let me begin by telling you how I got started with life planning.  In 1954, I was a young engineer with the General Electric Corporation, assigned to a Mr. O'Malley, who was preparing to retire after 44 years with the company.  One day, we were having lunch to discuss a radical concept that was just then beginning to take hold.  It involved having every separate business unit in the company develop 5- and 10- year projections of marketing, engineering and manufacturing objectives, with accompanying financial statements.  These were to be reviewed annually between September and October by the company president in meetings held at each manufacturing site.

That day, Mr. O'Malley made an unforgettable remark.  "If I had been schooled in this management technique when I was starting with GE, I would have transferred and applied these principles to my own private life!"  I thought about what he said.  My wife and I had discussed our life plans in general terms, but our goals were vague and our approach lacked organization.   What we needed was a system... some methods and procedures and documentation to provide a means for defining our life's objectives as well as of reviewing our progress from time to time.  JUST LIKE IN BUSINESS!  I thought about the way GE was re-defining the role and responsibilities of a MANAGER:

Plan, Organize, Integrate and Measure (POIM)

With all that business acumen at our disposal, we decided to transfer as much of it as we could; to manage our life together to the greatest extent possible.  We went forward WITH A DETERMINATION TO NOT LEAVE OUR LIVES TO CHANCE... to not be followers and, most of all... TO BE AUTHENTIC. 

Without a doubt, God has been a faithful factor in our planning and throughout our lives.  He imposed on us many tribulations, but each one strengthened and steered us in the right direction, and we were rewarded and refreshed for having endured them.  With tweaks and improvements along the way, the system worked beautifully – for us, for our children and for the others with whom we shared it.  Eventually, I was persuaded to teach these concepts publicly through seminars and then to publish them in my book, "Dream a Little, Live a Lot".  A few years later I teamed up with a talented software developer, Tim Horan, who has worked tirelessly to transform my humble system into a uniquely powerful yet easy-to-use modern computer-based application.
